bronze with a brown patina, 23 cm. high. Conceived and cast circa 1927. Signed and with foundry mark Cris Agterberg/Metaalgietery “Holland” A’dam.

Christoffel (“Cris”) Agterberg (Amsterdam 1883-Utrecht 1948) was a versatile artist and designer and maker of applied art (including ceramics), sculptures and paintings. This bronze head of Dutch ballerina Darja Collin (Amsterdam 1902-Italy 1967) shows his craftsmanship, the resemblance is striking. Ms. Darja Collin was a renowned ballerina during the Roaring Twenties and was married to famous Dutch poet Jan Jacob Slauerhoff from 1930 to 1935. She also starred in a Dutch film in 1935 “The Mystery of the Mondscheinsonate”
