A Rozenburg Den Haag eggshell porcelain vase with two handles and a modern, almost abstract decoration named ‘Juffertje in ‘t groen’ (Love-in-a-mist). The decoration design is by Jacobus Lucas Verhoog, and the vase was also painted by Samuel Schellink and Cornelis Arie Muylwijk. The vase is 16 cm high, marked with the manufacturer’s mark, year mark 1901, wo. number 563, blind mark 185 (model number) and painter’s monogram Verhoog.

Description
A Rozenburg Den Haag eggshell porcelain vase with two handles and a modern, almost abstract decoration named ‘Juffertje in ‘t groen’ (Love-in-a-mist). The decoration design is by Jacobus Lucas Verhoog, and the vase was also painted by Samuel Schellink and Cornelis Arie Muylwijk.

And the painters’ own books reveal an iron discipline. For example, there is a fine for tearing out a page, or for incorrectly recording a work order number. Everything is meticulously recorded; however, nowhere, unfortunately, is there a description of the creative process.

How did Verhoog arrive at this artistic form of ‘Love-in-a-mist’? Why not simply follow the botanical drawing by, for example, Elias Verhulst from Delft, circa 1600, see:Rijksmuseum
What also makes the decoration on this vase special is that it differs significantly from most other decorations by, for example, Hartgring and Schellink themselves. The very modern decoration (1901!) blends so well with the distinctive shape of the vase—the curved handles and the partially sloping long sides—that it almost seems as if the form has adapted to the decoration!
