Description

A very rare Rozenburg eggshell porcelain plate painted with two sparrows in a chestnut tree with chestnuts and leaves. Only 9 pieces of this model 47p plate were made in the 15 years that Rozenburg manufactured eggshell porcelain! The plate is 21 cm in diameter and approximately 2 cm high / deep. The painting was done by Bordewijk, Hartgring, Verhoog and Burghout in October 1900. Remarkable are the ‘holes’ in the leaves and the depth of the drawing, which makes eager use of the shape of the plate!

It is remarkable that the plate also bears the painter’s signature of Dirk Gijsbert Bordewijk. Presumably, the birds, sparrows, are by his hand, for the pattern book lists the dedication for this plate, along with 5 others in this work order 1501: ‘Hartgring; chestnuts’. It also states: ‘Verhoog: birds’.

But by sheer coincidence, I discovered an old photo of Galerie Gethmann in my own overview; a plate (model 47p) marked JLV (Jacobus Lucas Verhoog), Wed 1501, 1900, see: →

So not all 6 plates in this work order have the same decoration, and moreover, Verhoog’s birds differ considerably from those on the dish with chestnut leaves.
